On August 25, a series of severe thunderstorms swept through Glenview, with lightning striking a home at 4177 Midway Lane. Larry Shapiro captured dramatic images of the scene, showing firefighters responding to what quickly escalated into a working fire. The heavy smoke upon arrival prompted an immediate upgrade in response, bringing additional units from Morton Grove, Niles, Northfield, and Wilmette to support the local Glenview crews.
Morton Grove's Quint 4 was already en route when the call came in, so instead of returning to their station and switching to Squad 4—which was scheduled to respond—they were directed straight to the location. Ambulance 4 also arrived on the scene, increasing the crew strength to five members.
The fire department deployed multiple units, including a Pierce aerial ladder truck, a Pierce Dash CF fire engine, an E-ONE eMax fire engine, and other specialized equipment. Firefighters worked quickly to contain the blaze, with some seen venting the roof and others positioning themselves for control efforts.
Shapiro’s photos capture the intensity of the situation, highlighting the dedication of first responders as they battled the flames. A gallery of more images is available at shapirophotography.net.
