A 51-year-old man died and another was critically injured Tuesday afternoon after coming into contact with power lines while trimming trees in an Addison backyard.
Jose Fulgencio-Hueramo, of Melrose Park, was pronounced dead shortly before noon at Glen Oaks Hospital in Glendale Heights. At around 11 a.m., he and another individual were cutting tree limbs near Villa Avenue and Myrick Avenue when they both touched the power lines.
One person fell from the ladder and landed on the ground, while the other became stuck in the tree. After ComEd turned off the power, firefighters from Lombard and Addison arrived to rescue the individual still in the tree. One of the victims was airlifted to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove.
"They were able to cut the power to the lines, and at that point, firefighters from Lombard and Addison went up there and were able to get the gentleman down from the tree," said Joe Leone, the Addison fire chief.
Police indicated that the victims did not appear to be affiliated with a professional tree-cutting company. It remains unclear how they ended up in contact with the power lines.
The scene was captured by John Tulipano, who provided several images showing firefighters in action, including one of a tower ladder platform and a helicopter from Superior Air Med arriving on the scene. These photos highlight the critical nature of the response and the efforts made to save lives during this tragic event.
