Mold or die is the common term used to describe the tool used to produce plastic parts in molding. Molds are generally made from materials like hardened steel, pre-hardened steel, aluminum, and beryllium-copper alloy.
Injection molding involves the high-pressure injection of raw material into a mold, shaping the polymer (plastic) into the desired form. The material is fed into a heated barrel, mixed, and forced into a mold cavity, where it cools and hardens to the shape of the cavity. After a product is designed, usually by an industrial designer or engineer, molds are created by a moldmaker (or toolmaker) from metal—often steel or aluminum—and precision-machined to create the features of the desired part. Injection molding is widely used for manufacturing a variety of parts, from small components to large body panels of cars.
