Dual-function nanorod LED laser pen to write: can be made of light-charged electronic devices

With the advent of new LED arrays that emit and detect light at the same time, handsets and other devices may soon be able to be controlled with contactless gestures and charged with ambient light.

These light-emitting diodes, made up of tiny nanorods arranged in thin films, can create new interactive features and multitasking devices. Researchers from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Dow Electronic Materials in Marlborough, Mass., Reported this progress in the February 10 issue of Science.

"These LEDs are the beginning to make the display go something completely different and turn into a more interactive device than just displaying information," said Moonsub Shim, a graduate of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Illinois. Professor, is also the leader of this research. "This can form the basis for new and interesting designs for many electronic products."

These small nanorods with diameters less than 5 nanometers are made from three semiconductor materials. One that emits and absorbs visible light. The other two semiconductors control how the charge flows through the first material. The combination of these three materials enables light-emitting diodes to emit and sense light and respond to light.

The laser pointer is being written on a small multi-function pixel array made of dual-function LEDs that emit light and respond to light.

Outdoor Lighting

Refers to outdoor lighting other than road lighting. Outdoor lighting is required to meet outdoor visual work needs and achieve decorative effects.
