Tao Detian, a spokesman for the Ministry of Environmental Protection, said on the 31st that 1,500 waste oil drums soaked in flood water in Wuhan have been completely transferred, and the water quality of the Yangtze River has not been affected.
In the wake of the storm floods, environmental alarms have frequently been heard throughout China. While Jilin Province was trying to salvage the Songhua River chemical barrels, similar incidents were staged in Wuhan, Hubei Province.
At 11 o'clock on the morning of July 30th, a fertiliser transfer station for storing oil drums at Wuhan Changfeng Bridge was flooded by the soaring Han River, and about 1,500 waste oil drums containing resin, oil, etc. were soaked in river water.
Changfeng Bridge is a bridge over the Han River. It will be more than ten kilometers eastward and the Han River will enter the Yangtze River.
After hearing the news, a large number of local people organized a rush to the scene to collect and transfer empty barrels. The environmental protection department also continuously monitored the water quality.
Tao Detian said that so far all waste barrels have been safely transferred. The monitoring results showed that the water quality of the Yangtze River was not affected. The person in charge of the company involved in the accident has been controlled by the police.
