One more update from Eric Haak just before the New Year hits:
Around 11:30 AM, a fire broke out in a large U-shaped courtyard apartment building located on the 5600 block of South Kenwood, near the University of Chicago. Engine 60 was the first to arrive and reported a fire on the second floor. The scene was in a dead-end cul-de-sac, and the hydrant in front of the building was frozen, which complicated water supply efforts. Engine 63 had to back down onto 60th Street and provide water from a distant hydrant at the corner of 56th Street.
To give you an idea of how fast these crews operate, I arrived only four minutes after Engine 60 reported being on scene, and by the time I made my way around to the front, the fire was already under control. Parking was scarce, so I had to find a spot a bit further away. Since I don’t often visit that area, I took the opportunity to capture some rare shots of the apparatus that I rarely get to see up close.
Here are some photos from the scene, all taken by Eric Haak.
