China National Heavy Duty Truck Annual Production Expected to Break Through 100,000 Units
As of July this year, China's heavy-duty truck industry has seen a remarkable surge in production and sales. From January to July, the country produced and sold 61,838 heavy-duty vehicles, marking a 73.4% year-on-year increase. This growth has already surpassed the total from the previous year, with projections suggesting that annual production and sales could exceed 100,000 units. This performance places China among the top global manufacturers in the heavy truck sector.
China National Heavy Duty Truck Group (CNHTC) has been at the forefront of this growth. By the end of July, the company had produced 63,258 engines and sold 61,838 heavy-duty trucks, reflecting a 76.2% increase in production compared to the same period last year. Revenue reached 20.678 billion yuan, up 61.9%, while profits and taxes rose by 101.3% to 1.677 billion yuan. Additionally, exports brought in 1.947 billion U.S. dollars, a 47% increase year-on-year.
CNHTC's success is driven by its focus on high-quality products at competitive prices, which has helped it gain a strong foothold in the highly competitive market. The company has become the most profitable in China’s heavy truck industry. In 2023, the company broke through the 60,000-unit production and sales threshold, representing a 15.5-fold increase since the early days of restructuring.
Looking back, the company faced significant challenges before reform. At one point, its debt stood at 12.967 billion yuan, with an asset-liability ratio of 138.49% and losses totaling 8.3 billion yuan. However, after years of strategic development, it has turned around dramatically. In 2006, revenue reached 21.97 billion yuan, with profit and tax at 1.786 billion yuan. Its domestic market share for heavy trucks grew from less than 5% to 20%, and it achieved several national firsts, including dump trucks, cement mixers, fire engines, and heavy-duty vehicles over 14 tons.
Export volumes also saw a dramatic rise, increasing from zero to 6,296 units in 2006, earning 213 million U.S. dollars in foreign exchange. This year, the company expects to export 15,000 units, generating 300 million U.S. dollars.
With such impressive growth and strategic positioning, CNHTC continues to solidify its position as a leader in the global heavy truck industry.
