Have you let the dirt and grime accumulate on your bike, or did you just ride through muddy trails or wet roads? If your bike is making strange noises when you pedal, it’s time to give it some attention and restore it to its former glory.
**Clean the Drive**
The drivetrain is one of the most critical parts of your bike, so start by giving it a quick rinse with a low-pressure hose. This will help remove any sticks, stones, or debris that may have stuck to the chain. Rotate the chain while gently spraying to clean out sand and grime from between the links.

Once the big stuff is gone, it's time to focus on the finer details. Fill a bucket with hot water and add a few drops of dish soap. Use a stiff-bristled brush and apply the soapy water to the chain while it's in the largest gear. Scrub the chain thoroughly while rotating it, and you’ll soon see a shiny, clean chain emerge.
**Add Lubricant to the Chain Links and Remove Grit**
Now that the chain looks clean, it’s time to tackle the hidden grime. Apply a small amount of degreaser to each link while rotating the chain backward. Let it sit for a moment and then wipe it down with a clean rag. You might be surprised how much dirt still comes off.
Check the chain for any grit by twisting it between your fingers. If it feels rough or gritty, repeat the degreasing process until the chain feels smooth.

**Dry and Lubricate the Chain**
Once the chain is free of grit, make sure it’s completely dry. You can use compressed air or simply let it air dry while you take a break. Once dry, apply a thin layer of bicycle-specific lubricant. Use a drip cap to ensure even coverage, and rotate the pedals to work the lube into the chain links.
Wipe off any excess lube with a clean rag while turning the chain backward to avoid over-lubrication.
**Clean the Bike Frame and Wheels**
With the drivetrain clean and lubed, take a damp cloth and wipe down the frame and wheels to remove any remaining dirt. Follow up with a dry towel to eliminate any residue and leave your bike looking fresh and ready for the road.
