Foton Motor fully enhances its ability to sell clothes in Africa
In a significant move to strengthen its presence in the African market, Foton Motor's Overseas Division recently organized the "Futian Auto Angola Customer Symposium" in Luanda, the capital of Angola. This marked the first time that a Chinese automaker hosted a customer-focused event in the country. By engaging directly with local users, Foton Motor gained valuable insights into how its products perform under local conditions and identified specific customer needs, thereby deepening its connection with the Angolan market.
Moreover, this initiative helped enhance the image of Chinese automotive companies abroad and set a benchmark for sustainable growth in the export sector. Since the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Angola, the latter has become one of China’s key trade partners on the continent and is emerging as a promising hub for Chinese car exports.
In 2005, Foton Motor secured a major government contract, exporting 250 heavy trucks in a single batch — a record at the time. This made it the first Chinese commercial vehicle manufacturer to enter the Angolan market. With consistent quality and reliability, Foton has built long-term partnerships with the local government and holds a substantial share of the public sector. In addition, through extensive efforts in local distribution, it has also attracted a growing number of private customers, giving it a strong edge over other Chinese automakers in the region.
Despite the vast potential of the Angolan and broader African market, many Chinese automakers still operate within traditional trade models, resulting in small-scale exports and limited market penetration. Weak after-sales support has further hindered their reputation in what is considered a "golden market." From a long-term perspective, a robust after-sales service system is essential for success in overseas markets. Foton Motor has taken the lead by introducing the concept of "service creates value," transforming after-sales support into a key differentiator.
The Angolan government and media welcomed the symposium warmly. Major outlets like Angola National Radio and TV covered the event, boosting the visibility and credibility of Chinese automotive products in the region.
According to an official from Foton Motor's Overseas Division, the company plans to use Angola as a strategic base to improve its after-sales services across Africa. As a leading Chinese brand, Foton's efforts are expected to elevate the overall service standards of the Chinese auto industry in the region.
Looking ahead, Foton Motor aims to export 200,000 vehicles globally by 2010, with a significant portion going to Africa. A well-established after-sales network will be crucial in achieving this target.
