The reporter learned from the Science and Technology Bureau of the Corps that the project “Research and Application of Key Technologies and Equipment for Mechanization of Cotton Productionâ€, chaired by Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and researcher Chen Xuegeng of the Xinjiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences, recently won the second prize of the 2016 National Science and Technology Progress Award.
The project is aimed at the outstanding problems of cotton production methods, low production efficiency and comparative efficiency. Under the support of national science and technology research projects, the research team has worked hard for 11 years to develop fine beds and ultra-narrow precision seeding. The key technical equipments such as high-efficiency spraying of defoliating agent, mechanical harvesting, storage and transportation, and innovation have established a mechanized technical system for cotton production, which is the first to achieve mechanization of cotton production in China. The overall level of the project has reached the international leading level.
It is understood that the results of the project have been widely applied in Xinjiang and have achieved significant economic and social benefits. From 2013 to 2015, the total mechanized planting area of ​​cotton in Xinjiang was 38.29 million mu, and the cost-effectiveness was 14.624 billion yuan. The whole process of mechanization technology for cotton production established by the project has played a good demonstration role in the country. It has been demonstrated in cotton areas such as Shandong, Hebei, Hubei and Jiangsu, and has been extended to countries such as Tajikistan and Sudan.
