A research group consisting of Osaka University and Hiroshima University in Japan published a paper in Science on February 13 (electronic edition) saying that it has succeeded in accelerating ions and the like with the previous one percent intensity laser particle.
The technology can be used to accelerate the use of ions to achieve the treatment of cancer and other diseases with radiation, can also be used to accelerate the neutrons, without damaging the concrete structure of its internal inspection methods.
The research team said it was generally believed that accelerating particles required a concentrated beam of light in a very small area and that the laser intensity had to be increased.
However, the group's LFEX, the world's largest high-output laser device using the Osaka University Suita Campus (Suita City, Osaka Prefecture), conducted an irradiation test and found that after a long exposure time (6 picoseconds, that is, one Trillionths of a second), the temperature of the "plasma" where the laser irradiation causes the material to separate into electrons and ions rises and the ions accelerate. This phenomenon is called "the time method effect."

Using this method, the Japanese research team succeeded in achieving the effect of accelerating ions to 25% of the speed of light with the previous one percent of the laser intensity.
Yu Yue-kuei, an expert in laser plasma technology and an associate professor of laser plasma technology at Osaka University, said: "Although the efficiency is drastically improved, it needs to be further accelerated for practical applications. In addition, this technological breakthrough will help miniaturization of laser devices and cut costs."
