According to the British Automotive News website, BMW expects to make breakthroughs in battery technology in 2026, producing solid-state batteries and applying them to their cars.
The principle of a solid-state battery is the same as that of a conventional liquid lithium battery , except that its electrolyte is solid, and its density and structure allow more charged ions to accumulate at one end, conducting more current, thereby increasing battery capacity. Therefore, with the same amount of electricity, the solid-state battery will become smaller. Not only that, because there is no electrolyte in solid-state batteries, storage will become easier. When used on large equipment such as automobiles, there is no need to add additional cooling tubes, electronic controls, etc., which not only saves costs, but also effectively reduces weight.
It is reported that the initial goal of BMW solid-state battery is to increase the capacity by 15%-20%. The battery is currently under development, but it takes 10 years to achieve production, mainly because durability testing takes a long time.
The next step in BMW's existing battery technology will be realized in 2018, which will be used for BMW's pure electric-powered version of the Mini Cooper E and the new BMW X3.
However, BMW will continue to develop its internal combustion engine technology, and it is expected that at least by 2030, the internal combustion engine will remain the most popular power choice for BMW. BMW hopes to increase the efficiency of its internal combustion engine to 33%, while the efficiency of electric drive systems is as high as 90%.
Ian Robertson, BMW's marketing director, said: "The internal combustion engine still has a long way to go. We will improve the efficiency of internal combustion engines and combine them with electric vehicles in a variety of ways. Plug-in cars are faster and less noisy. Acceleration is also faster, but sets new standards for carbon dioxide emissions and economic development. Now legislation is moving in this direction, and we will also improve internal combustion engines and electric power systems."
