Major Cement Company Improves Stockpile Measurement with Elios 3

Major Cement Company Enhances Stockpile Measurement with Elios 3

A leading cement plant in France has successfully implemented the Elios 3 drone equipped with LiDAR technology to improve clinker inventory measurements, making the process safer, faster, and more accurate.

Key Benefits at a Glance

Speed

With just 10 minutes of flight time and 20 minutes of post-processing using GeoSLAM Connect, the plant was able to generate an accurate volume measurement for the clinker stockpile.

Operation in Dusty Environments

The Elios 3’s 3D Live Map enabled safe navigation inside the silo, even in conditions with heavy dust that severely limited visibility.

Safety

Unlike traditional methods that required workers to stand on a high platform, the Elios 3 eliminated the need for manual data collection, significantly improving safety.

Introduction

Clinker is a key raw material used in the production of various types of cement. It is ground into a fine powder and then used as a binding agent. Clinker is typically stored in large silos, and accurate inventory tracking is essential for efficient production planning.

Traditionally, operators manually estimate the amount of clinker by standing on a platform inside the silo and using a pole to measure the depth of the pile. This method is not only time-consuming but also poses significant safety risks, especially when working at heights in poorly lit and dusty environments.

Customer Needs

At a cement plant in France, employees were tasked with manually measuring clinker levels from a narrow, unstable platform located 25 meters (82 feet) above the floor. This approach exposed them to hazards associated with working at height and often resulted in inaccurate measurements.

Recognizing these challenges, the plant sought a safer and more reliable solution for inventory management. They wanted to explore how modern technologies could enhance accuracy and reduce risk during the inventory process.

Solution

The plant decided to test the Elios 3, a LiDAR-equipped drone designed for indoor and challenging environments. The device can capture highly accurate 3D data while flying and uses SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) to create real-time 3D maps.

This capability made the Elios 3 ideal for use inside the dusty and dark clinker silos. Even when visibility was poor, the 3D Live Map allowed pilots to navigate safely and precisely, ensuring complete coverage of the stockpile area.

Results

The implementation of the Elios 3 proved to be a major success. The drone provided fast, accurate, and reliable clinker measurements, significantly improving the efficiency of the inventory process.

Some of the main benefits included:

  • Speed: Measurements were completed in just 10 minutes of flight time and 20 minutes of post-processing.
  • Accuracy: The data collected was far more precise than manual estimates.
  • Dusty Environment: The 3D Live Map and LiDAR stabilization allowed the drone to operate effectively in low-visibility conditions.
  • Safety: No personnel had to climb onto the high platform, reducing the risk of accidents.
  • Coverage: The 3D map ensured full visibility and accurate mapping of the entire silo.

Additional Inspection of a Filter Shaft

In addition to clinker inventory, the plant also used the Elios 3 to inspect a filter shaft. Inspectors suspected damage to the internal beams and wanted to get a close-up view.

Flying the drone into the shaft revealed severe deterioration in several beams. This information allowed maintenance teams to plan repairs quickly, preventing potential shutdowns and ensuring continued operation.

Conclusion

The successful use of the Elios 3 for clinker inventory has led the plant to consider adopting it permanently for their inventory needs. Beyond this, they are also exploring its use for regular visual inspections of other plant assets.

Given its ability to operate in dusty and low-visibility environments, the Elios 3 shows great potential for a wide range of industrial applications where traditional methods fall short. With its combination of speed, accuracy, and safety, the Elios 3 is proving to be a game-changer for the cement industry.
