Unlike gasoline or diesel drivers, who rely solely on gas stations, EV drivers have many more options for recharging. But where exactly do most people charge their electric cars?
In this article, we'll explore the five most common places where EV drivers choose to charge and what the future holds for EV charging infrastructure.
**Where Can I Charge My Electric Car?**
The answer depends on your location, lifestyle, and personal preferences. According to our Mobility Monitor report, which surveyed hundreds of EV and potential EV drivers across Europe, there are five main places where people currently charge their electric vehicles or plug-in hybrids.
The majority—64%—charge at home, followed by workplaces (34%), public parking lots (31%), gas stations (29%), supermarkets (26%), and shopping malls and department stores (22%).
Let’s take a closer look at these top five locations.
**1. Charging at Home**
Home charging is by far the most popular option, with 64% of EV drivers using it. As EVs become more widespread, PwC predicts this trend will continue. The appeal lies in cost and convenience. Charging at home is typically the cheapest way to power your vehicle, and you can do it overnight without leaving your house. It’s a simple, hassle-free process that makes EV ownership even more appealing.
**2. Charging at Work**
Workplace charging is a close second, with 34% of drivers already using it. Many more would like to if the option were available. Employers who offer EV charging provide a valuable amenity that can attract and retain talent. Plus, not everyone has access to home charging, making workplace stations essential for some drivers.
**3. Charging at Gas Stations**
Gas station charging is gaining traction, with 29% of European drivers using it regularly. These locations often offer DC fast charging, also known as Level 3 charging, which can replenish a battery in just minutes. This makes gas stations a great option for quick stops during long trips.
**4. Charging at Retail and Hospitality Locations**
With EVs becoming more common, many retail and hospitality venues now offer charging. Supermarkets, malls, and restaurants are among the most popular spots, with 26% and 22% of drivers using them respectively. It’s a convenient way to charge while running errands or enjoying a meal.
**5. Public Charging Stations**
Public charging is used by 31% of European EV drivers. These stations are vital for supporting the growing number of electric vehicles on the road. While many countries have enough stations today, the demand is expected to grow rapidly. The International Energy Agency predicts over 145 million EVs on the road by the end of the decade, meaning more public charging stations will be needed.
