The 16,500-ton free forging hydraulic press, developed and designed by the China National Heavy Machinery Research Institute (formerly known as the Xi'an Heavy Machinery Research Institute) and manufactured by Shanghai Heavy Machinery Co., Ltd., has been successfully installed at the Shanghai Heavy Machinery Plant and is now in the commissioning phase. This state-of-the-art equipment marks a major milestone in China's heavy industrial manufacturing capabilities. According to reports, this is currently the largest free forging hydraulic press production line in the world. It features a significant improvement in automation, allowing it to produce forgings weighing over 600 tons. This capability is essential for meeting the demand for large-scale components used in critical sectors such as nuclear power, thermal and hydroelectric power generation, shipbuilding, chemical processing, and machinery manufacturing—industries vital to China’s economic growth and national security. During its development, the hydraulic press incorporated successful experiences from both domestic and international free forging technologies. It utilizes advanced control systems and cutting-edge engineering methods. The design also takes into account the specific conditions of China’s large-scale equipment manufacturing, including material selection, casting, forging, heating, transportation, installation, and commissioning. Over 10 key technological challenges were overcome, along with several innovations that have significantly enhanced China’s capacity to develop ultra-large forging equipment. The successful launch of the 16,500-ton free forging hydraulic press not only aligns with global trends in free forging technology but also meets the growing need for precision, automation, and specialization in large-scale forging processes. This achievement represents a major step forward in China’s efforts to strengthen its position in the global heavy industry sector.
