The 16,500-ton free forging hydraulic press, developed and manufactured by the China National Heavy Machinery Research Institute (formerly known as the Xi'an Heavy Machinery Research Institute) and produced by Shanghai Heavy Machinery Co., Ltd., has been successfully installed at the Shanghai Heavy Machinery Plant and is now in the commissioning phase. This milestone marks a major breakthrough in China's heavy industrial capabilities. According to reports, this is currently the largest free forging hydraulic press production line in the world. It significantly enhances automation levels and can produce forgings weighing over 600 tons. This advanced equipment meets the growing demand for large-scale forgings required in critical sectors such as nuclear power, thermal power, hydropower, shipbuilding, chemical engineering, and machinery manufacturing—industries vital to China’s economic development and national security. During its development, the hydraulic press incorporated successful experiences from both domestic and international free forging projects. It utilizes cutting-edge control technologies and adapts them to the specific conditions of China's large-scale equipment manufacturing. The project involved careful selection, processing, and heating of large castings and forgings, while addressing challenges in heavy lifting, transportation, installation, and commissioning. Over 10 key technological breakthroughs were achieved, along with several innovations that have greatly enhanced China’s capacity to develop ultra-large forging equipment. The successful development of this 16,500-ton free forging hydraulic press not only aligns with global trends in the industry but also meets the increasing demands for numerical control, high precision, and specialized production in large-scale forging. This achievement underscores China’s growing strength in advanced manufacturing and its commitment to technological self-reliance.
