Valin Motors Pushes the State III Heavy Truck

Valin is set to aggressively promote its National III standard heavy trucks in the first half of 2008, aiming to capitalize on the full implementation of the standard later in the year. "After the National III Standard is enforced, Valin must be the best," said Liu Hanru, chairman of Valin Co., Ltd., who hinted at a strategic move he had planned for early 2008. On January 15, Valin held a business conference in Tianjin, where Liu Hanru delivered a 1 hour and 15 minute speech. His most emphasized slogan was “Defining the New Standard for the State III,” reflecting the company's confidence in achieving a sales target of between 25,000 and 30,000 units this year. Starting July 1, China will implement the National III emission standards for commercial vehicles, which presents both challenges and opportunities. Liu Hanru believes that this is the moment for Valin to shine. The company aims to double its sales again in 2008, following a significant increase from 6,000 units in 2006 to 13,000 in 2007, with 2,500 units exported. Valin’s product lineup spans from lightweight to high-end models. For instance, the "Port King" tractor is designed for toll collection in North China, while a new heavy truck developed in collaboration with Italy is expected to challenge European brands. However, Liu Hanru emphasized that Valin remains focused on the high-end market. The company is also accelerating its localization efforts. It plans to start mass production of its own axles in March or April, although engine production is still under consideration. Valin’s Marketing Director, Wang Yanan, outlined the 2008 business strategy, which includes establishing over 30 4S stores nationwide to ensure coverage in every sales region. This expansion reflects the company’s long-term vision. Liu Hanru described the 2008 heavy truck market as “cloudy” but expects a relatively stable year with potential peaks before the National III implementation. He anticipates a surge in demand during the first half, followed by a period of adjustment in the second half. With the National III standard now being implemented, Valin has already introduced compliant models in cities like Beijing and Shenzhen, and it has fully matched Euro III engines from brands such as Cummins and Hino. Liu Hanru expressed confidence in Valin’s readiness, stating that the company is ahead of the industry in terms of technology and compliance. In the first half of 2008, Valin will focus on launching all National III models, along with training programs for maintenance and service staff. By July 1, the company is expected to be one of the most prepared in the market. Looking overseas, Valin is prioritizing international exports. With Tianjin Xingma serving as a key hub, the company aims to double its export volume to 5,000 units in 2008. Russia is a major target, with an initial goal of exporting 3,000 units in 2008. Valin is testing full-airbag heavy trucks to better meet Russian market demands. As global competitors face economic and regulatory challenges, China’s heavy truck companies are well-positioned to capture market share in developing countries. With competitive pricing and improving technology, Chinese brands are becoming a strong force in the international truck market.
