The world's largest rib cold bending robot, developed by Hubei Sanhuan Forging Equipment Co., Ltd., is set to be shipped to Daewoo Shipyard in Yantai, China, shortly. This massive machine measures 3.7 meters in height, 6 meters in trunk length, 3.5 meters in width, and weighs 40 tons. It will be used to manufacture the hull of a ship exceeding 300,000 tons, making it one of the largest vessels ever built. Designed independently by the Institute of Shipbuilding Technology and Equipment at Wuhan University of Technology, this advanced robot costs around 5 million yuan. It is currently the most powerful rib cold bending equipment in China, with a thrust capacity of 8,000 tons. It can bend steel ribs into complex free-form curves at any angle, thanks to its intelligent control system that allows for precise and flexible processing, no matter how unusual the shape. Mao Yunsheng, director of the institute, explained that in 2003, with support from the Hubei science and technology research project, the team successfully developed the rib cold-bending robot. This breakthrough marked the first time the entire rib processing process was automated and digitized globally. The robot solved long-standing issues such as wrinkling, edge inversion, and other defects, significantly improving the quality, precision, and efficiency of rib production. With seven patents to its name, this robot is the only one in China with independent intellectual property rights in the field of rib cold bending. Today, six different models are in use across over 40 domestic shipyards, including Jiangnan and Wuchang Shipyards, and have also been exported to countries like Vietnam and South Korea. Its global impact continues to grow as the demand for large-scale, high-precision shipbuilding increases.
