Robot making the world's largest ship
The world's largest rib cold bending robot, standing 3.7 meters tall, with a 6-meter-long trunk and 3.5 meters in width, weighing 40 tons, is set to be shipped to Daewoo Shipyard in South Korea soon. Manufactured by Hubei Sanhuan Forging Equipment Co., Ltd., this advanced machine will be used at the Yantai base to produce the hull of a ship exceeding 300,000 tons—the largest vessel ever built. Designed independently by the Institute of Shipbuilding Technology and Equipment at Wuhan University of Technology, the robot costs around 5 million yuan and represents the most powerful rib cold-bending equipment currently available in China.
With an impressive 8,000-ton thrust, it can bend steel ribs into complex free curves at any angle, thanks to its intelligent control system. No matter how unusual the shape, the robot can process it efficiently, making it a game-changer in shipbuilding. Mao Yunsheng, director of the institute, explained that in 2003, with support from the Hubei science and technology research project, the team successfully developed this robotic system. It was the first in the world to achieve full automation and digitization in rib processing, solving long-standing issues such as wrinkling, edge inversion, and improving the quality, precision, and efficiency of the production process.
This groundbreaking equipment is the only one in China with independent intellectual property rights and has secured seven patents. Currently, six different models are in use across more than 40 domestic shipyards, including Jiangnan and Wuchang Shipyards, and have also been exported to countries like Vietnam and South Korea. The robot marks a significant milestone in China’s maritime industry, showcasing its growing technological capabilities on the global stage.
