Sharp made flexible ultra-thin photovoltaic cells

Sharp and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) jointly developed a thin and light photovoltaic cell for use in satellites and spacecraft. The weight is only about 1/7 of that of traditional photovoltaic cells, and the power generation efficiency is also higher. The use of this battery helps to achieve satellite weight reduction and can be launched using small, inexpensive rockets. It will verify its power generation capacity and durability in space as early as December, and actively promote the use of this battery by satellite manufacturers in Japan and abroad.

The new battery can be used for satellite surfaces and weighs only 1/7 of conventional batteries.

Photovoltaic cells account for about 10% of the satellite's weight. The newly developed battery has a thickness of only 0.3 mm and is fixed in a manner that the thin film battery is sandwiched in a resin film. The battery is said to have a power generation efficiency of approximately 32%, reaching the highest level of global photovoltaic cells for satellite use. Since the battery is very thin and can be bent, it can be attached to a surface of a satellite body or the like where it is difficult to mount the battery. By expanding the battery area and increasing the amount of power generation, it is possible to increase the satellite performance by increasing the number of observers mounted on the satellite.

JAXA will install the new battery on an unmanned spacecraft that transports supplies to the space station, which is expected to be launched in December. In addition to detecting whether the new battery can withstand the strong vibrations of the rocket launch, it will be exposed to space for about 3 months to verify that the battery can generate electricity as expected.

According to the US Satellite Industry Association, the market size of satellite-related industries reached US$ 208 billion in 2015, an increase of 20% from 2010. In the future, as the number of small satellite launches increases, the demand for photovoltaic cells used in space will also increase.
