Caterpillar's Progress Rail announced that its EMD 710 Series E 23BTier 4 marine engine has been finalized by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Tier 4 at the International Work Boat Show in New Orleans, USA. This is the only Tier 4 final certified two-stroke engine in the marine market.
Brian Grinter, president of Power Products at Progress Rail, said, "Our customers are asking for EPA-certified solutions to keep their lifecycle low. I am very happy that we can get this certification."
It is reported that the EMD 710 engine is divided into 8, 12, 16 and 20 cylinders, with a power range of 200-5000 hp. The 12-cylinder marine engine of the EMD 710 series has the same dimensions as the previous ones and does not add to the valuable space of the ship. The system incorporates selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology to reduce pollution emissions while operating at peak efficiency.
Progress Rail will deliver the first two of these models to customers by the end of 2016. This certification gives the company the opportunity to bid for multiple ferry and tugboat projects.
