2-Alarm fire in Barrington Hills, 5-3-18

A large house in Barrington Hills was engulfed in flames early on May 3, 2018, after a lightning strike sparked a devastating fire. The Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District (FPD) responded to the emergency at 83 Paganica Drive shortly after 4:40 a.m. Upon arrival, firefighters found heavy fire coming from the second floor and the mansard roof. The homeowner had already evacuated the home, which is located in an area without fire hydrants. In order to combat the blaze, the first engine and tanker arrived with 4,000 gallons of water, while the second engine set up a drafting operation using three portable tanks at the end of the street. Over 14 tankers worked for more than two hours, shuttling water to supply several hand lines. Despite the challenges, the fire department maintained a steady water supply throughout the operation. The fire caused significant damage to the nearly 9,000-square-foot home, leaving it uninhabitable. According to reports, the fire's origin is believed to be linked to a lightning strike that occurred during violent storms earlier in the morning. Neighbors described hearing a loud boom before the fire was discovered. The fire took around two hours to bring under control, and no injuries were reported. A photo from Facebook shows the intense flames consuming the structure, while another image captures the Barrington Countryside FPD’s E-ONE e-MAX Engine 37 at the scene. Local news outlets, including the Daily Herald, reported that the neighborhood's lack of hydrants forced firefighters to implement a rural firefighting strategy, relying on water tenders to sustain operations. Officials confirmed that no water supply issues were encountered during the response. This incident highlights the importance of preparedness in areas without traditional fire protection infrastructure. Residents and emergency services continue to work together to ensure safety in such communities.
