Tanker rollover with Hazmat in Des Plaines, 5-8-19

Firefighters from Des Plaines were dispatched to Elmhurst Road (Route 83) this morning after a tanker truck overturned on the bridge over I-90, trapping the driver inside. Emergency responders successfully extracted the driver and transported them to a local hospital for treatment. The vehicle, which was carrying ethanol, sustained multiple ruptures, leading to a significant chemical leak onto the roadway. Hazmat teams and the Foam Task Force from O'Hare International Airport arrived at the scene to manage the hazardous spill. After sealing the leaks, airport fire crews applied foam to neutralize any remaining risks. The cleanup process is expected to take several hours, as a private cleanup crew and a replacement tanker are currently en route to safely remove the spilled ethanol. Local traffic was heavily impacted, with delays reported in both directions along the busy highway. Authorities are urging drivers to avoid the area until the situation is fully resolved. Photos from the scene show the extent of the damage, with the overturned truck lying across the bridge and emergency vehicles surrounding the site.
