Classic engine at Darien-Woodridge

On Tuesday, we highlighted the addition of the Darien-Woodridge Fire District to our site. Among the apparatus showcased at Station 2 was an unusual antique fire engine with a rich and storied past. Jack Connors has shared some fascinating details about this historic vehicle, along with a few photographs.

The engine in question is a 1949 Oshkosh/Howe pumper, equipped with a 1,000-GPM pump and a 1,200-gallon water tank. The Oshkosh chassis is a Model W-2201, with serial number 3541, while the Howe body carries the serial number HR-10-7961. This combination makes it a rare find, especially given its age and original configuration.

This particular engine had a long and varied career before finding its way to the Darien-Woodridge Fire District. It first served at the Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois, where it was used for facility protection. Later, it was deployed in Grandview Park, which was eventually annexed by Oak Lawn. After that, it joined the Belmont Fire District, which later merged into the Darien-Woodridge Fire District.

It's always interesting to see how these vintage pieces continue to serve, even after decades of use. The fact that this engine has remained in service and now bears the markings of the Darien-Woodridge Fire District is a testament to its durability and historical significance. Thanks to Jack Connors for sharing this great piece of fire department history with us.
