UNEP promotes cooperation in wastewater treatment

"The UN report points out that 80% of the world's sewage is not treated directly, and this problem is particularly serious in developing countries." Zhang Shigang, representative of the UN Environment Agency's China office, said that the global urban population is expected to double in the next 40 years. Low-income countries have only 8% of the capacity needed to effectively treat sewage. Water pollution poses a serious threat to health, biodiversity, and ecosystems, and solving water pollution problems is imminent.

Last year, under the support of the UNEP Global Sewage Initiative and Chinese partners, the project "Transfer of South-South Cooperation in Wastewater Treatment Technology" was initiated. More than 40 kinds of cost-effectiveness were investigated in 22 Chinese cities. Sewage treatment technology suitable for transfer. At present, the project's report has been completed and policy recommendations have been made for South-South cooperation in the field of sewage treatment. Zhang Shigang said that the project will continue to introduce China's sewage treatment technology to other developing countries and promote South-South cooperation, experience sharing, and technology transfer.

"At present, China's sewage treatment industry has entered a mature period. China's accumulated technology and experience can be used by developing countries for reference." Li Anfeng, deputy director of the Environmental Engineering Design Institute of the Beijing Municipal Institute of Environmental Protection, said that he hopes to promote the country from the top South-South cooperation, to build a service agency responsible for technology transfer, to help the domestic environmental protection companies go out, not just in the form of government-assisted projects.

"The UNEP will build a South-South environmental cooperation and technology transfer platform under China's 'One Belt and One Road' framework and opportunities, pay attention to environmental issues such as sewage and solid waste in Silk Road countries, explore technological transfer mechanisms and financing models, and integrate all parties. Resources will transfer China's economically suitable environmental technologies to provide environmental protection and support for economic upgrading and industrial development in developing countries, said Zhang Shigang, representative of the UNEP's China office.

According to reports, in the past year, the UN Environment Agency organized experts to conduct surveys on more than 40 sewage treatment technologies in more than 20 typical cities in China. At the same time, it conducted research on the technological needs of African and other developing countries. At the same time, the UN Environment Programme decided to make more explorations on the mechanism to build a platform for all parties to participate in. The Chinese-English Sewerage South-South Cooperation website, which was hosted by China Net, was officially released a few days ago, realizing resources and demand. Docking.
