Increasing the use of E85 would mean planting more corn, which would absorb more CO2. As fossil fuel usage rises, initiatives like this become increasingly important.
The primary downside of flex fuel is its efficiency. It's approximately 20% less efficient than traditional gasoline. While it may be cheaper per gallon, the added time required for refueling might deter potential buyers, especially in industries like shipping and logistics, where frequent stops could result in significant delays.
This drawback raises two crucial questions: Is owning an ethanol-powered car worthwhile, and will they ever become mainstream?
Is owning a flex fuel car a smart choice? In short, yes, but the details are more complex. Ethanol fueling stations are predominantly found in urban areas, making them harder to locate than electric vehicle charging points but more common than hydrogen fueling stations. This isn't a strict limitation on the range of flex fuel cars, as they can also run on gasoline. However, if you need to rely on gasoline just as much as flex fuel, the appeal of owning an FFV diminishes.
For the average driver, FFVs are neither significantly cheaper nor more expensive than their gasoline counterparts, but they do require more frequent refueling. While the price per gallon of fuel is lower, the operating cost per mile might be higher due to the less efficient engines. FFVs qualify for the Alternative Fuel Vehicle Tax Credit, but only tax-paying U.S. citizens or businesses can benefit from it. There is no Canadian equivalent.
In terms of public perception, gasoline remains the cultural norm, whereas electric vehicles have a futuristic vibe and the convenience of home charging. Limited awareness of flex fuel options hinders the necessary infrastructure growth to maximize their potential. Lack of infrastructure and awareness leads to low sales and investment—a vicious cycle.
Overall, it seems fair to say that there are currently more reasons for a consumer to buy an EV than a flex fuel vehicle. However, this could change. Rising gasoline prices and concerns over current EV battery production—both ecological and humanitarian—could make flex fuel cars a more attractive option. Industry reports predict a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.8% in the FFV market through 2030.
