Autodesk Boosts Advanced Rendering Capabilities Through Acquisition of Solid Angle

Autodesk, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADSK) has made a strategic move by acquiring Solid Angle, the company behind Arnold, a powerful ray-tracing renderer used globally for high-quality 3D animation and visual effects in film, TV, and advertising. While the financial details of the deal remain undisclosed, the acquisition marks a significant step in enhancing Autodesk’s capabilities in the media and entertainment industry. Arnold, known for its efficient global illumination, is already trusted by over 500 studios and thousands of independent artists worldwide. It has played a key role in award-winning projects such as *Ex Machina*, *The Martian*, and the Emmy-winning series *Game of Thrones*. The integration of Arnold into Autodesk's ecosystem is expected to boost creative workflows and support more scalable production processes, especially with cloud-based solutions on the rise. Chris Bradshaw, Senior Vice President at Autodesk Media & Entertainment, emphasized that this acquisition aligns with their goal of helping artists enhance creativity and productivity. "Efficient rendering is becoming more critical, and with Solid Angle, we can better address this complex part of the creative process," he said. Marcos Fajardo, founder of Solid Angle, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership. “Autodesk shares our vision for simplifying the rendering pipeline and improving computational performance,” he noted. “Together, we can accelerate development and expand our reach to serve an ever-growing user base.” Going forward, Arnold will continue to function as a standalone renderer, supporting major platforms like Linux, macOS, and Windows, as well as third-party applications such as Houdini, Katana, and Cinema 4D. Autodesk 3ds Max and Maya will also maintain support for other renderers, ensuring flexibility for users. “We are committed to maintaining compatibility with third-party tools,” Bradshaw added. “Our aim is to enhance collaboration and efficiency across all stages of the creative workflow, regardless of the software being used.” Pricing and licensing for Arnold will remain unchanged, with perpetual licenses still available. Customers should continue purchasing through their usual channels. Looking ahead, Autodesk stated that the acquisition will not affect its previously issued guidance from February 2016. However, the company acknowledged potential risks and uncertainties associated with the transaction, including integration challenges and market competition. About Autodesk: Autodesk empowers creators, engineers, and designers around the world to imagine, design, and build a better future.
