The Fox Lake Fire Department responded to a fire at an apartment building located in the 500 block of Autumn Boulevard in Lakemoor around 11 p.m. last night. Arriving just four minutes after the initial call, crews found flames visible through the roof of the three-story lightweight structure. Shortly after, the building collapsed, prompting a significant response.
This incident was classified as a 3-11 for tankers and a Box Alarm due to the structural collapse. At least 19 fire departments were on the scene, showcasing a coordinated regional effort. Four tower ladders—Fox Lake, McHenry Township, Wauconda, and Round Lake—were deployed, along with multiple handlines and ground-level master streams to control the blaze.
Several notable apparatus were seen during the operation. Countryside and Grayslake both sent their newly acquired units to the fire. Several engines from Antioch, Grayslake, and Round Lake, as well as squads from Fox Lake and Barrington, were equipped with Nightscan or Command Light towers, providing critical lighting for the scene.
One particularly interesting moment occurred when the Fox Lake Tower Ladder (Spartan/3D/Nova Quintech) in sector 1 extended its articulating jib over the burning structure. McHenry Township had four units on the scene: engine, tower, tanker, and squad. Round Lake also had three units: engine, tower, and tanker. Lake Villa sent an engine, tanker, and ambulance, while Grayslake provided an engine and tanker. Lake Bluff’s engine made the longest trip of any department.
Photos from the event show the intensity of the situation. Antioch’s American LaFrance/Alexis engine was illuminated by a Nightscan tower, while a Fox Lake squad showcased two light towers that lit up the entire area. Countryside’s new US Tanker, which was put into service this summer, was already being used as a second tanker. The scene also featured a Round Lake engine using a Command Light mounted on its cab roof.
Of the 19 responding departments, ChicagoAreaFire.com currently lists the following: Buffalo Grove, Cary, Countryside, Lake Bluff, Lake Forest, Lake Villa, Libertyville, Long Grove, McHenry Township, Mundelein, Newport Township, and Wauconda. The following departments are not yet listed on the site: Antioch, Barrington, Fox Lake, Grayslake, Lake Villa, Nunda Rural, and Round Lake.
