Open House for MABAS (update)

A few photos from the MABAS Home Day Open House held last week at the readiness center warehouse in Wheeling. The event provided a great opportunity for local fire chiefs, emergency responders, and community leaders to tour the facility and learn more about its critical role in disaster preparedness. The first image shows a group of area fire officials gathered during the open house. Several presenters shared insights on various topics related to emergency management and response. The photo was taken by Larry Shapiro. Congressman Peter Roskam also attended the event and spoke directly to fire service personnel, highlighting the importance of strong partnerships between government and first responders. This photo was also captured by Larry Shapiro. One of the highlights of the tour was the Mobile Field Office, a unique support unit designed to expand interior working space with its slide-out sides. This unit is part of the Mission Support Unit (MSU-North) and plays a vital role in large-scale operations. Another photo showcases the unit's features and functionality. A sign near the unit explains its purpose and capabilities, giving visitors a better understanding of how these units support emergency efforts across the region. Another notable piece of equipment is the Oshkosh P-15, one of the largest crash trucks ever built. It was acquired from the Air Force and can carry 6,000 gallons of water and 600 gallons of AFFF. Though not currently in active service, it’s expected to play an important role in future operations. The truck is equipped with two high-capacity pumps and turrets, making it a powerful asset for firefighting and rescue missions. The warehouse is also home to Illinois Task Force 1 (ILTF-1), the state’s Urban Search and Rescue team. As part of MABAS-IL, this team is dedicated to responding to disasters and providing critical support when needed. One side of the facility is fully stocked with the resources required for their missions. The latest addition to the US&R team's mobile equipment is a flatbed roll-off for transporting lumber, which will help in debris removal and structural support during large-scale incidents. These updates show the ongoing commitment to improving response capabilities and ensuring readiness for any situation.
