A few photos from the MABAS Home Day Open House held last week at the readiness center warehouse in Wheeling. The event provided a unique opportunity for local fire chiefs and emergency responders to explore the state-of-the-art facilities and equipment that support their critical work.
One of the highlights was the presence of several fire department leaders who gathered to learn more about the operations and capabilities of the MABAS Readiness Center. Congressman Peter Roskam also made an appearance, addressing the personnel and offering his support for their vital service.
The center is equipped with a variety of specialized units designed to enhance response efforts during large-scale emergencies. Among them is the Mobile Field Office, which expands its interior space using slide-out walls. This unit, known as MSU-North, serves as a mission support hub for the northern region.
Another key asset is the Oshkosh P-15, a massive 8x8 crash truck acquired from the Air Force. It carries an impressive 6,000 gallons of water and 600 gallons of AFFF, along with two powerful pumps and turrets. While not currently in active service, it’s expected to play a significant role in future operations.
The facility also houses Illinois Task Force 1 (ILTF-1), the state's Urban Search and Rescue team. This team is a crucial part of MABAS-IL and is ready to respond to disasters across the state. New additions to their mobile equipment include a flatbed roll-off for transporting lumber, enhancing their ability to support rescue efforts.
These open house events are essential for building community connections and ensuring that first responders have the tools they need to protect lives and property.
