SAN RAFAEL, Calif., May 19, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Today, Autodesk, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADSK) announced the early availability of the BIM 360 Assets module within the Autodesk Construction Cloud. This new module empowers construction teams to monitor and manage project assets seamlessly across the entire building lifecycle, from initial design stages to final handover, all from a single, unified platform. With enhanced access to asset data in the field, construction teams can now conduct on-site commissioning and address defects more effectively, reducing operational delays and minimizing risks. The BIM 360 Assets module will be incorporated into BIM 360 Build subscriptions and will be widely available starting mid-June.
The BIM 360 Assets module simplifies the tracking of diverse construction assets, including materials (like concrete, wood, and drywall), components and equipment (such as air handling units, pumps, chillers, and elevators), movable machinery (for instance, forklifts, excavators, and concrete buckets), as well as specific rooms or areas.
"By leveraging the BIM 360 Assets module, we will be able to provide a comprehensive and fully integrated archive of all construction assets, streamlining the transition process from construction to operations," said Simon Terroitin, BIM Coordinator at EBC, Inc. "This tool will enable us to collaborate more effectively with our clients during site construction, delivering exactly what they need immediately after the project wraps up. We believe this will significantly enhance our client relationships and open doors for future business opportunities."
"The world we live in today highlights the critical role of resilience, especially in terms of project and data continuity," remarked Sameer Merchant, Head of Research and Development for Autodesk Construction Solutions and Associate Vice President at Autodesk. "For project owners and contractors, this means moving away from spreadsheet-based asset tracking toward a single source of truth accessible to all teams at any given moment. The BIM 360 Assets module will optimize both daily operations and handover processes, eventually becoming an integral part of every successful company's resilience strategy. This is just another way Autodesk Construction Cloud is assisting construction teams in efficiently managing the entire building lifecycle, ensuring data flows smoothly from design to operation."
BIM 360 Assets bridges the gap between asset data management for contractors and owners. Traditionally, assets have been monitored using multiple spreadsheets or paper-based systems, a cumbersome and time-consuming approach, especially when tracking assets throughout a project's lifecycle. When asset data remains isolated from the project, tasks such as checking the installation status of HVAC units, locating excavators, or scheduling long-lead interior finishes can become inefficient. Such disconnects can lead to delays, cost overruns, and even legal liabilities if assets are improperly installed, not to mention dissatisfaction among clients during facility management setup.
BIM 360 Assets provides a user-friendly, centralized platform to track all construction assets from planning to operations. Key features of the BIM 360 Assets module include:
- **Centralized Documentation**: Quickly access all asset information, including product details like cut sheets, certifications, training materials, and warranty documents, via a centralized repository.
- **Data Integration from Quantity Take-Off**: Easily extract asset data directly from the model and import it into BIM 360, enabling the office team to monitor assets in the field. With a two-way connection, progress can be visualized in Assemble.
- **Field Management Workflow Integration**: Link assets and commissioning efforts to other field management workflows, such as documenting defects using Issues and completing inspections with Checklists—all from a mobile device.
- **Barcode/QR Code Scanning**: Conduct relevant inspections and maintenance effortlessly by simply scanning a barcode or QR code using your mobile device.
- **Customization and Importing**: Quickly populate an asset list from spreadsheets and easily track when an asset has been specified through acceptance using custom categories, statuses, and attributes.
For contractors, BIM 360 Assets allows alignment of project assets with the model, ensuring all teams have up-to-date information, while also providing a digital record of issues resolved during installation. These new capabilities help mitigate future risks and litigation by linking a historical record to each asset. For owners, data handover saves considerable time and offers an in-depth understanding of changes made to the building dating back to the design phase. For instance, an owner could scan a piece of equipment, retrieve its installation history, view documentation, and schedule maintenance accordingly.
"At PARIC, we focus on identifying the best enterprise solutions to address challenges across hundreds of projects rather than just one," stated Andy Leek, Vice President of Technology & Innovation at PARIC. "The new BIM 360 Assets module provides a streamlined method for managing equipment sets and other facility components across the entire organization. We'll be able to simplify project setups, thereby reducing miscommunication, eliminating rework, and minimizing risks during handover."
