Caring, Collaboration, Agility, Integrity, and Safety are the core values that define who we are at Rümi. As a company dedicated to bringing happiness to the places people live and work, we’re passionate about spreading joy throughout our communities.
In celebration of National Volunteer Week, we’re excited to share some inspiring stories from our Rümineers—team members who embody our values and make a real difference in the community!
**Making the Connection**
If you’ve ever attended one of our Rümi events, you might have met Thomas and Garrett, two enthusiastic volunteers from our Customer Care Happiness Centre. Together, they've contributed over 40 hours of volunteer work, adding to the more than 400 hours Rümi employees gave back to the community in 2022—and counting!
We recently had the chance to chat with them about their experiences as volunteers and why giving back means so much to them.
**What do you enjoy most about volunteering?**
Garrett: “For me, it’s all about connecting with people. I love being able to meet customers in person and show them the face behind the phone!â€
Thomas: “I really enjoy meeting people and learning from them. It’s one thing to assume, but hearing directly from customers is incredibly valuable.â€
**Why do you think volunteering and connection go hand in hand?**
Garrett: “I was born and raised in Alberta, and I love hearing the stories people share about ATCO or Blue Flame Kitchen cookbooks. It's amazing how many Albertans have a personal connection to us!â€
Thomas: “As someone not originally from Alberta, I see how deeply connected the province is. Everyone knows someone who knows about ATCO. Being part of the ATCO family helps us build trust and understanding.â€
**What’s your favorite part of volunteering?**
Thomas: “It’s just fun! Having conversations with people, even when it’s fast-paced, is always rewarding. We're never stuck behind a booth—we're always out there, engaging!â€
Garrett: “It’s not just about the activations or prizes. We also volunteer with groups like WINS, and being part of a team makes it even more enjoyable. Plus, it’s a great way to build friendships while giving back.â€
**What’s your most memorable moment as a volunteer?**
As they both smile, Garrett shares a funny story from one of the events they worked on together.
Thomas: “I remember when we were at a soccer event (Cavalry FC at Spruce Meadows), and two people ended up trading their sunglasses!â€
Garrett: “Yeah, we had these cool green Rümi sunglasses, and someone really wanted a pair for his birthday. When he saw the last ones, he asked if he could trade his name-brand sunglasses for a pair of Rümi shades right in front of us!â€
**What’s Next for Rümi in the Community?**
Since launching ügive, our community initiative, we've focused on supporting local charities that align with our mission. From home builds with Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta to clean-up projects with HomeSpace, and donation drives like Handbags with Heart with WINS, our Rümineers have stepped up time and again to give back.
**2022 Community Investment Achievements:**
- Exclusive sponsorship of the Home Refurbishment Program with Habitat for Humanity, offering $20,000 and six months of free energy from ATCOenergy, plus meals from Blue Flame Kitchen for 10 families.
- Donated over 400 hours of volunteer time in the community.
- Helped build homes with Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta.
- Sorted donations with WINS (Women in Need Society).
- Revitalized spaces with the HomeSpace Society.
- Launched a matching program where Rümi donates to charities on behalf of employees who volunteer outside of ügive initiatives.
Whew! It’s safe to say ügive had a strong start, but we’re not slowing down anytime soon. Subscribe to our newsletter to stay updated on upcoming events and discover what we’ll be doing next in your community!
