The Belvidere Fire Department was called to the 600 block of W. Locust Street on Wednesday morning, September 2, 2020, at around 10:36 a.m., after reports of smoke coming from a multi-family apartment building. Firefighters arrived on the scene and found light smoke emerging from the rear of the three-story structure as residents were being evacuated.
Upon investigation, firefighters located the fire in a second-floor apartment within the 16-unit complex. The blaze was quickly contained and extinguished, preventing further spread.
Fire officials determined that the incident was accidental and caused approximately $20,000 in damage to the building, which is valued at $950,000. Several local emergency agencies responded to the call, including Boone County Fire Districts #2 and #3, Cherry Valley Fire, Marengo Fire, Boone County EMA, OSF Lifeline, and the Capron Rescue Squad.
