Autodesk Showcases its Portfolio for the Convergence of Design and Manufacturing at IMTS 2018

As design and manufacturing continue to merge, it's more critical than ever for companies to understand and adapt to the future of production. This week, as the bi-annual International Manufacturing Technology Show (IMTS) kicks off in Chicago, Autodesk is highlighting its range of technologies that empower manufacturers to embrace change—enabling them to produce more, improve quality, and do so with fewer resources. At our booth, we're showcasing cutting-edge examples like the Lightning Motorcycle featuring a generatively designed swingarm and the WAAMpeller, a hybrid additive and subtractive propeller developed by the Port of Rotterdam’s RAMLAB. These projects demonstrate how modern manufacturing can push boundaries through innovation. One of our key tools, Fusion 360, offers generative design capabilities that leverage AI to generate hundreds of valid design options based on specific criteria such as strength, weight, materials, and manufacturing methods. This not only speeds up product development but also leads to better results—like lighter, stronger, and more consolidated parts. For instance, General Motors has used this technology to reduce part count, simplify supply chains, and lower assembly costs. We’re also demonstrating our latest advancements in CNC machining and additive manufacturing through PowerMill and Netfabb. PowerMill 2019 now includes dedicated additive strategies and simulation tools, specifically designed for hybrid machines. It generates safe and efficient toolpaths for directed energy deposition (DED) processes, offering specialized 3- and 5-axis programs for building components from scratch. Alongside this, PowerMill still provides a vast library of subtractive manufacturing strategies for precision machining. Netfabb 2019 brings improvements like multi-scale cloud simulation and automatic support adjustments. To complete the picture, we’re showcasing our vision for a cloud-connected smart factory with Fusion Production. Available via browser or smartphone app, it offers real-time visibility into production status across design, manufacturing, and operations teams. Data from PowerMill can be automatically sent to Fusion Production, enabling operators to start machines directly through the app. Such automation streamlines workflows and reduces manual errors, introducing a new level of autonomy and efficiency. But while our software is powerful, we know that it’s only part of the equation. That’s why Autodesk has built strong partnerships with leading machine-tool manufacturers. By ensuring seamless integration with major CNC machines, we help our customers focus on what they do best: making things efficiently and precisely. Our collaborators include top names like BeAM Machines, C. R. Onsrud, Datron, DMG MORI, DMS, Doosan, Haas, Hardinge, Okuma, and many others. Together, we're delivering solutions that help manufacturers stay competitive and innovative. Wade Anderson, a product specialist at Okuma, explains: “Autodesk isn’t just a CAD/CAM company—it’s a vertically integrated manufacturing software provider. Their ability to offer end-to-end solutions—from design to quality and OEE monitoring—allows parts to be created from start to finish. With Okuma and Autodesk, our customers gain access to cutting-edge technologies that boost productivity, profitability, and control over their future.” (To learn more about how Okuma and Autodesk are working together, watch the video here.) IMTS attendees can stop by our booth (#133222) in the East Building at McCormick Place to explore our solutions, meet our machine tool partners, and see real-world examples of what manufacturers like Lightning Motorcycle, the Port of Rotterdam, and Briggs Automotive Company have achieved using our software and CNC technology.
