According to The Daily Herald, Antioch will hold a “wet-down” ceremony for the new engine on May 29th.
Two years after receiving a federal grant, the Antioch Fire Department is preparing to welcome its newest fire engine with a special event that honors historical traditions. The department will host a ceremony featuring the time-honored practice of “wetting down” the new truck, as well as pushing out the old one and bringing in the new. The event is scheduled for May 29 at 7 p.m. at Fire Station 1, located at 835 Holbek Drive, and is open to the public. “In the past, when horse-drawn engines were used, the tradition was to wet down the wheels and wipe them off before moving the fire pump into the station,” said Fire Chief John Nixon. “They would wet the wheels to preserve the wooden spokes and prevent them from rotting.” This new engine will have a slightly different look compared to others. The department’s apparatus committee chose a traditional black roof with a red body, which is a departure from most of Antioch’s white-roofed trucks. “The committee felt this was a great opportunity to mark the department’s upcoming 100th anniversary next March and establish a new tradition,” Nixon explained. “Black over red is very common in Chicagoland.” The truck will also feature a newly designed Antioch Fire Department scramble emblem.
