New engine in Antioch – update

Jeff Rudolph shared a photo of the new UST engine in Antioch, along with some updates about the department’s recent changes:
The new Antioch engine will be stationed at Station 1, the ALF will move to Station 3, and the ’73 Pirsch has been retired.

According to The Daily Herald, Antioch is set to hold a “wet-down” ceremony for the new engine on May 29th.
Two years after receiving a federal grant, the Antioch Fire Department is preparing to welcome its newest fire engine with a special event that harks back to the days of horse-drawn wagons. The ceremony will include the traditional rituals of “wetting down” the new truck, pushing out the old one, and bringing in the new. The event is scheduled for May 29 at 7 p.m. at Fire Station 1, 835 Holbek Drive, and is open to the public. “Back when horses pulled the engines, they would wet down the wheels to protect the wooden spokes from cracking,” said Fire Chief John Nixon. “It was a way to maintain the equipment.” This new engine will stand out from the rest. The department’s apparatus committee chose a black roof with a red body, which is different from most of Antioch’s trucks that have white roofs. “This is a chance to mark the department’s 100th anniversary next March and start a new tradition,” Nixon explained. “Black over red is popular in Chicagoland.” The truck will also feature a newly designed Antioch Fire Department emblem.
